Day 2 of Historic Green is now behind us – and what a day! Hillel Group only had about 25 return, though they specifically did not want to do the Greenlight New Orleans project today. With the two Operation Comeback projects well underway, we were able to get most of them working on basic cleanout of the projects.
The Center for Sustainable Engagement & Development (CSED) has begun a list of homeowners who need assistance with household tasks, so I was able to ask Warrenetta Banks for four projects for today – I think this is an interesting development that will enable us to schedule larger numbers of volunteers on projects that put them in one-on-one contact with homeowners, and let them get a tangible sense of the difference they are making.
Later in the morning, several from this group came with me to Ariane Wiltse’s home to help her with de-nailing and cleaning up the back portion of her house. There was one group in particular, from NCU, which just had a fantastic attitude about their work. I set them up clearing the remaining portion of a field in the afternoon (which had been overgrowing since Katrina!), and then set them on helping Calvin Alexander in the afternoon. Tomorrow, I’ve asked them to begin working with radiant barrier installation, which is important work and they seem like they’ll be able to take seriously and have a good time at. This makes me want to really focus on small college groups for next year’s event, as they kept each other’s morale up, sang school-songs, and just seemed to have a good time in general.
